Just another reason for every person to VOTE!

v

In the midst of the Democratic convention I thought I would pass this email around. Though I am a Hillary supporter, I am ecstatic to have so much energy surrounding the democratic party and Barack Obama. I hope people tune in and take action. This election is HUGE!! Take a part in making history!

THIS IS MOVING. HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET…..IF ….WE EVER KNEW……

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.

1wom.png

Remember, it was not until 1920
that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

2won.png

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed
nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking
for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.
Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing
went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of
‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’

3won.png

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above
her head and left her hanging - bleeding and gasping
for air.

4won.png

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her
head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate,
Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging,
beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917,
when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his
guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because
they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right
to vote.
For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their
food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks
until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because-
-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work?
Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s new
movie ‘Iron Jawed Angels.’ It is a graphic depiction of the battle
these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling
booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the
actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote.
Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege.
Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history,
saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk
about it, she looked angry. She was–with herself. ‘One thought
kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,’ she said.
‘What would those women think of the way I use, or don’t use,
my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just
younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.’ The
right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her ‘all over again.’

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history,
social studies and government teachers would include the movie in
their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere
else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing,
but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think
maybe a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: ‘Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.’

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so
hard for by these very courageous women. Don’t forget to vote!
History is being made.

Brian Solano asked me to help out with a Spyder shoot for the past two days. briansol.png
This is really the best type of work. It pays decently and is piss easy! Plus the outdoor world is so small you end up hanging with a bunch of your friends all day, and those you don’t know you’re tight with by the end. My buddy Andy Mann was helping assist the shoot. At the end of the first day he mangled his ankle carrying a bunch of heavy gear. We were all sure he was out, but the dude held strong and stayed the whole next day. I think he he even planned to hike severe miles in the park the next day too! SICK!!

I have yet to stay more than two consecutive nights at my new place. Apparently this is the irony of my life. I stayed many nights in a row at a camp site and as soon as i get a place I can’t seem to find a chill time. We leave tomorrow for C-Springs to hang with Joe’s family and meet the new baby! It should be quite the family affair as it’s his Dad’s 60th birthday and the whole gang is going to be there.

A few days ago I sent my hardest route to date Cantina Boy 13b (8a). The progress was slow and daunting and up unto the day I actually sent I was sure it would take two more weeks. It’s just one milestone in my climbing, but it always feels good to reach a new level.

Settling in

This is the first time I’ve been in a hotel room without being overly obsessed with the shower and that’s nice. For the past few nights we’ve been posted up in our new crib in Carbondale, CO. Our roommates are comprised of the most kick ass crew around those parts making it all the more sweeter.
Yesterday we drove out to Longmont to meet with my Dad who was playing the Lyons festival. It’s always fun to watch him play and we get all the backstage, VIP perks which makes us feel extra special. My dad can probably relate the most to my nomadic life considering he’s been working as a musician his entire life. When we meet up on the road we’re (well he’s!) never short of stories.
Today is the big guy’s birthday… HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!

The newest edition… meet Grace!!

This is little Gracey, who I had the pleasure of meeting last week. She’s absolutely gorgeous!!

1gracey1.jpg

Her mommy and Daddy, Betsy and Brian, have waited patiently for her arrival from China. Anyone who knows someone or has been through the adoption process themselves knows this is a lengthy (3 years!) and arduous process. Needless to say everyone was very excited to finally meet her. Considering Auntie Sarah has been my best friend since I was like 13, I had the privilege of being inducted Auntie Colette!

The Business Side.

The Tradeshow was kinda like my last trip to Boulder. You get trapped in this vortex. Where in Boulder I found that all my decision making skills had evaporated, at the Tradeshow it seems you forget to eat, pee, and focus on one person for more than a minute and a half. I actually enjoy the hyper social atmosphere and though you don’t always get the best one-on-one with people it’s awesome to see all the peeps you run into around the country/ world. Not to mention the in the moments when you can actually think straight, it’s seriously motivating to see so many great climbers in one place.

The awe of the animal kingdom.

Joe and I are pretty sick of taking pics of each other, so he’s really been getting into nature animal photography. Here are some of his INCREDIBLE animal shots.

Besides that just climbing, climbing, a little resting and more climbing. In reality I need more rest, and days such as yesterday when Joe talked me into walking all the way up to the Fortress in 90+ temps just doesn’t count. Still beats sitting in a desk!
